Hi,

in the past days I came across a very nice tutorial from Jonathan Williamson, “Creating a Microscopic Virus Effect” (Blender Cookie):

In this Blender 2.5 video tutorial we take a look at how to create a microscopic virus effect in a few short steps. The tutorials covers modeling, materials, lighting, and some simple compositing.

You can create this nice image in only around 40 minutes.  Here Is my version as I followed the tutorial (could need some work, but works as a wallpaper):

Hi,

After trying  to render some fluid in blender, I think I need more RAM:

Linux vs Blender

Linux vs Blender

The bottom shows the System a few seconds before Blender got killed. The RAM and Swap where both at 99% (hard to take the screenshot accurate enough with a laggy system ;) ).

Info:

After baking some fluid simulation, I wanted to render the fluid with smooth shading and Subdivision Surface of two. The baked fluid had a resolution of 256.  My current System is a Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @ 2,4Ghz with 4Gb of RAM and 2Gb of Swap. Enough for the mostly testing stuff I’m doing, until now ;) .

Baking took a long time , 9 hours for >30 frames. That’s because Blenders volume/mesh based fluid simulation runs at only one core.

I used a pretty basic setup, see screenshot below:

So let’s continue the funny stuff :)

Hi,

there are some very interesting changes in Blender, related to Mesh Painting. Miika Hämäläinen aka MiikaH has written code for Mesh Painting. Just have a look at his videos:

He also has written a basic tutorial, you can find it here. If you want to test it, have a look here. He provides a patch and special builds on GraphicAll.

For that I’m using Twitterbar, a very useful Firefox addon in this case, simply click on the twitter icon in the adressbar and it tweets the current URL.

Hi

Hi

blog.lxde.org:

LXDE was started already in 2005 in Taiwan and has spread all over the world. During the last year the project made big advances. New components have been added and older ones were updated. We have formed a viable translation project with people translating components from Peru to Egypt to Japan to Germany and all around the globe. LXDE is now included in many Linux distros, was ported to Google Android, has been shown to work on BSD, and was established as a Desktop Project for OpenSolaris.

So please vote for LXDE.

Hi

I have added one of my older projekts to the project list. It’s called FastMountApp. FastMountApp is an application for minimalists. Combine it with a shortcut and you can easily mount and unmount your USB devices and cdrom’s/dvd’s with only one click. Here some screenshots:

Note: This is a very small tool with only a basic functionalities.
