After trying to render some fluid in blender, I think I need more RAM:
The bottom shows the System a few seconds before Blender got killed. The RAM and Swap where both at 99% (hard to take the screenshot accurate enough with a laggy system
).

After baking some fluid simulation, I wanted to render the fluid with smooth shading and Subdivision Surface of two. The baked fluid had a resolution of 256. My current System is a Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @ 2,4Ghz with 4Gb of RAM and 2Gb of Swap. Enough for the mostly testing stuff I’m doing, until now

Baking took a long time , 9 hours for >30 frames. That’s because Blenders volume/mesh based fluid simulation runs at only one core.
I used a pretty basic setup, see screenshot below:
